Textron Air Taxi Could Fly Next Year

Textron is making progress on not one but two new aircraft models that are set to revolutionize the way we travel and carry goods.

Kansas-based Textron eAviation has revealed developments in its Nexus eVTOL aircraft program while preparing to test another new plane—the hybrid-electric cargo drone dubbed Nuuva V300.

In 2022, Textron’s newly minted eAviation business acquired planemaker Pipistrel and also took on the Nexus program from Textron’s Bell subsidiary. Since then, the company has been focused on validating its engineering process and is moving on to the build phase of its Nexus eVTOL. Company president and CEO Kriya Shortt said this is “a pivotal year” as the team begins mating the aircraft’s wing with the fuselage.

The Nexus is capable of flying about a hundred miles on electric propulsion, carrying three to four passengers and a pilot. Uses for Nexus might include urban air mobility or first response, including for law enforcement or emergency medical aid. Flight tests are targeted for 2025.

Meanwhile, the Nuuva V300 is in a prototype phase. It’s described as an “ultra-long-range eVTOL” that can carry more than 600 pounds of cargo. While Textron is not committing to a release date — nor is it taking orders for the plane — it does believe the unmanned aircraft will hit the skies for testing later this year.

Believe it or not, Textron eAviation has even more up its sleeve. According to reports, the firm plans to explore other cargo UAV solutions as well, perhaps including light courier last-mile delivery. Textron eAviation will explore other cargo UAV solutions to serve additional markets, such as light courier last-mile delivery services.
