GE Aerospace’s AI Has Capacity for “Child-Like” Learning
Working alongside the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, GE Aerospace engineers have helped develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can interpret and understand concepts like a child would.
Improving Over Time
Current “generative” AI systems can recognize patterns and make inferences, such as synthesizing vast amounts of data into much smaller summaries.
The jet engine maker, however, integrated computer vision technology into a generative AI program to develop the groundbreaking new system. It can, in effect, analyze the mistakes it makes and improve its performance over time — a demonstration of “continuous learning.”
Accurately Assessing New Environments
The research moves engineers closer to AI capable of assessing new environments or conditions and responding appropriately.
At present, GE Aerospace researchers say that the program can describe objects such as airplanes, which are characterized as having “a wide body” with an engine and wings.
Optimizing GE Aeropace’s Operations
GE Aerospace, which is working on the technology with the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, hopes advanced techniques could enable AI to have an even greater impact on its operations, from improving workplace efficiency and bolstering inspections to optimizing aircraft scheduling and utilization.
Ultimately, those types of systems could prove transformative across a range of consumer, commercial, and national security applications.
